Dear Sir,
" I have no faith in a religion or God that can not share the suffering of the poor, can not help the handicapped, and can not take care ot ill people. Religion, to me, is the
selfless desire to do something for the other.Religion means caring for others."
So said Swami Vivekananda. The modern and well-equipped Manilal
Rikhavchand Kothari Lions Orthopaedic and General Hospital at Navsari upholds
this saying by Swami Vivekananda, and it is truly a site of pilgrimage and
particulary for every Lion member.
Every small step is a beginning
towards a great deed. This hospital initally was started as a small
physiotherapy unit in 1978. This auspicious work led to a flow of donations and
by 1990 this Hospital came into being costing around one crore
rupees.
Dr.Paritosh Bhatt, an Orthopaedic surgeon, has been providinghis
service for the last four years. Having been trained under world famous Polio
Surgeon Dr.Adinarayan Rao from Visakhapattanam, he has done more than four
hundred polio operations so far. He has also performed several orthopaedic
surgeries and Elizorav operations successfully. Dr. Suresh Tejwani, a
physiotherapist providing his kind services for the last nineteen years of which
ne physiotherapy unit for twelve years, and with the hospital for the last seven
years. About twenty four visiting consultants and specialists have been
affiliated with different departments in this hospital. The hospital has also
organised various camps and seminars by several specialists free of
charge.
To serve the poor is to serve God. Those who offer happiness to
people in despair and wipe tears of the sufferers experience the richness ot
life. For the last seven years we have been trying to materialize this motto. We
have been looking for ways to support the poor and help Polio patients regain
their self-sufficiency. The trustees of this hospital visit the patients
everyday, morning and evening, to assure adequate welfare. Fifty percent beds
are made free on a permenant basis specific motive of helping poor. Similarly,
polio operations are done at no cost to the patients. Last year we held more
than three hundred polio operations free of charge, and we expect to continue
our work at that rate.
Naturally this kind of work requires a sizeable
fund to take care of huge expenses. A new project has been undertaken to the
tune of about Rs. 1,56,80,000 for this very purpose.
Yours
Sincerely,
Kumarpal R. Shah,
Chairman.
